Welcome to Hooper’s World

Basil Hooper portrait

The Basil Hooper Project Group was established in 2014 to showcase the work of New Zealand Arts and Crafts architect Basil Bramston Hooper (1876–1960).

The three-year project ran until 2017. It developed this website to document Hooper’s work in the South Island and Auckland, and formed a research archive now held by the University of Otago’s Hocken Collections. It also curated an exhibition, hosted house tours, and ran a workshop and other events. The project drew from public collections and the owners of Hooper buildings to define the work of a leading figure in the New Zealand Arts and Crafts movement.

The content of this site is drawn largely from Ralph Allen’s book Motif and Beauty (2000, ISBN0473073285) and we acknowledge Ralph’s generous assistance.

Although the project has wound up, this site will continue to be maintained and updated where possible. If you have information on any building by Basil Hooper, please fill in the online form or email  basilhooperproject@gmail.com or david.murray@planetnz.com. Do let us know if we are using any incorrect, wrongly attributed or out of date material.

Thanks to The Southern Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Architects for its generous funding support for the website.
